Re: metal too thick?

Quarter inch is pretty thick, I think. Seems like you'd spend more time drawing it out than you would actually forging your blade. You could try using an abrasive cutoff wheel to cut them in half...

Re: metal too thick?

I've made a bunch of knives out of the same stock you just described with great results. If you want a thicker blade, omit the distal tapering. If you can, take pics of what you're trying to describe...

Re: metal too thick?

I lean toward TTW's thoughts on "not hot enough". You should be able to do the distal tapering from any reasonable thickness if the steel is the right temp. 1065 should forge like butter when properly...

Re: metal too thick?

do you have any pictures of the problem blade? It sounds (as already mentioned) to me that it is either too cold or maybe too hot (though I doubt that's a big issue with 1065 as you would have to be...

Re: metal too thick?

i believe i will try cutting it lengthwise. i do spend more time drawing it out than making the actual blade. how many heats is too much for the carbon in the steel to be negativly affected to the...

Re: metal too thick?

As far as forging heats go, heating a lesser mass of steel means it heats up quicker, and the hotter it can get. This makes a world of difference if you're using a small brake drum forge like mine. I...

Re: metal too thick?

How many heats is too many? Depends on the smith. Can you keep it in the reducing zone of the forge as much as possible and in air as little as possible? Then you can do a lot of heats with little...

You can get a pretty good idea of what BI is talking about, by looking on and around your anvil. If you are getting a lot of scale flake building up in these areas, you need some help learning what's...

Re: metal too thick?

One other thing to note that it is VERY easy to forge too long and have the piece get too cold. Not a problem so much with mild steel; but it will really mess up high carbon steel causeing cracking...

Re: metal too thick?

Can you tell us in terms of color how hot you are getting the steel? Is your steel flowing red? orange? yellow? Light yellow?
